Sa-wat dee! Welcome to Thailand! Between 8 and 9 am, you'll be picked up from your designated hotel along with fellow travelers in your group. If you would prefer a different centrally located hotel in Bangkok for your pickup, please inform your booking agent at least 14 days prior to your departure.
Your journey begins at Bang Pa Inn Palace, a former summer residence of Thai royalty situated 65 kilometers north of Bangkok along the Chao Phraya River (approximately 1.5 hours away). Take in the stunning grounds, featuring a blend of European and Thai architectural styles and gardens.
Next, you will explore Ayutthaya, an ancient capital of Siam and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visit Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon, where you might even catch a glimpse into your future with the help of a fortune teller. Then, head to Wat Phanan Cheoeng, one of the oldest temples in Ayutthaya, often compared to the Taj Mahal for its beauty, and home to a remarkable 19-meter-high Buddha statue. Behind this temple lies an 18th-century shrine dedicated to a Chinese princess who tragically took her life due to the king's betrayal.
After enjoying lunch, you’ll visit the 13th-century ruins of Wat Phra Mahathat, known for its striking rows of beheaded Buddhas and the iconic Buddha head enveloped in Banyan tree roots, a popular photo spot. Finally, travel west to Kanchanaburi (approximately 3 hours) and check into your resort along the famous River Kwai.
In the morning, embark on a trip to Erawan National Park, which is about 1.5 hours away. Here, you can discover the renowned seven-tiered waterfall or simply enjoy a swim and some relaxation. This stunning waterfall is often regarded as the most beautiful in Thailand, featuring glacial blue waters cascading through the forest into tranquil pools shaded by bamboo—perfect for a refreshing dip. If you're up for it, you can hike from the first level to the seventh, which takes around ninety minutes. The highest level is typically quiet and offers breathtaking views over the surrounding jungle. Don’t forget to bring your swimwear and suitable footwear for the hike!
After lunch, you'll make your way back toward Kanchanaburi (approximately 1 hour) to delve into a poignant chapter of the region’s history. The Hellfire Pass memorial commemorates the Allied POWs and Asian workers who perished while constructing some of the most challenging sections of the Thai-Burma Death Railway. This pass, which was carved 18 meters into the rock, received its name from the fiery light used during nighttime work.
Next, you'll continue for a short distance (about 20 minutes) to Nam Tok Train Station, which marks the end of the original Death Railway built during World War II by the Allied prisoners. Enjoy a ride along the historic tracks beside the Kwai Noi River, passing through Tham Krasae station, known for its stunning panoramic views of the river as it curves along the mountainside. Once you arrive at Kilen Train Station, you'll transfer back to your hotel (approximately 30 minutes). In the evening, consider visiting Kanchanaburi's vibrant night markets to sample a variety of Western Thai dishes.
After breakfast, set off on a guided tour of the local sights via a traditional saamlaw (tricycle). This tour will take you to the WWII War Museum, the Allied War Cemetery, and the iconic Bridge over the River Kwai. Experience stunning landscapes while delving into a significant and somber chapter of the area’s history, allowing time for reflection on those who sacrificed their lives during this challenging period. You will conclude this brief adventure with a return journey to Bangkok, taking around 2 hours, where your trip will come to an end around 2 pm.
